John Corbin Resigns as Snowmaking Chairman
Pasted Graphic
John Corbin and Jerry Hazard at past Bike Swap

John Corbin, first chairperson of the Lapham Peak Snowmaking Fundraising Committee, has resigned after 3 years of service.  Under his tenure, Phase 1 and 2 of the snowmaking project were successfully completed.  John personally organized the very successful Bike Swap, which has raised nearly $10,000 for the snowmaking project over the past three years.  Many thanks to John for his diligent leadership over those crucial first three years.  John himself says this recognition "seems more than I deserve with so many people helping in the project."
Note: At the end of this summer, the underground piping will be installed and the core 1 kilometer snowmaking loop will be completed. With the underground water delivery, the DNR will not have to spend most of their time moving hoses, so when the temperatures are cold enough, snowmaking can be maximized. The next step is to expand the manmade snow loop to 2 kilometers. DNR Passes Extended Hunting Seasons

The Natural Resources Board passed all parts of the extended hunting season. (See below for details.) Now, contacting legislators is the only way to prevent deer hunting on the sking, hiking and mountain biking trails during the prime outdoor season for these activities. How to contact your state legislator.

Deer Hunting on Ski Trails over Christmas Holidays

Time is running out if you wish to give feedback on the proposed expanded hunting seasons during hiking, biking and ski seasons. You have a few days before the April 23rd meeting in Madison to contact the committee members or to get on the agenda to speak at the meeting. Click here to go Tom Held's blog for information on how to contact committee members or to be able to speak at the meeting.

Bikers, hikers and skiers will need more blaze orange

By Tom Held
Friday, Mar 28 2008, 10:40 AM
Blaze orange should be the hot fashion color in the southern Kettle Moraine next fall and winter, even for forest users who don't tote guns.
Expanded hunting seasons proposed to help control the spread of chronic wasting disease will open the state forest, including the biking and skiing trails, well before and beyond the traditional gun deer seasons...

Local Skier, Luke Bodensteiner Receives USSA Promotion
Pasted Graphic

The USSA (United States Ski Association) announced today that Luke Bodensteiner has moved up from his job as Nordic Director (overseeing the cross country, nordic combined, and ski jumping Olympic teams) to become the Associate Athletic Director for all 6 USSA sports. Luke began his racing career under the lights in our Wednesday night series, then at Heritage Ridge. During his high school years, Luke was the perennial national age group champion. The lights from Heritage Ridge were donated to Lapham and were the start of our present lighted trail system. Click here to view entire article on Luke's promotion.

MORE FROM MASTER'S WORLD CUP

Sorry that I didn't get all the local skiers in the initial story below. (Scroll down for more in World Cup.) Don Bilden and Art Mitchel won a bronze medal in the relay. On a personal note: I met Art in my first XC race, the Milwaukee Nordic Club family relays (1979), where we were involved in a neck and neck sprint to the finish. Over the years, Art and I were often racing each other to the wire, so I'm glad to see him still on the podium as it brings back a lot of pleasant memories... as do all of our top finishers, all of whom have been workout partners at one time or another. (I also omitted, in previous entry below, to mention that Beth Schluter won a gold medal in the relay.)

Lapham Skiers Shine at Master's World Cup

Lapham Ladies at World Cup In McCall, Idaho

Some of our local skiers were very successful at the Master's World Cup, held in McCall, Idaho, March 1-7, 2008. Don Bilden, Beth Schluter and Mary Eloranta led the way with medal finishes. Beth, many times World and National age group champ, scored two third place (World overall) finishes (age 60-64). Don, also past World and National age group champ, was top American in the 15K Freestyle (age 70-74), placing 4th overall. And Mary, an elite wave Birkie skier (who has devoted many hours coaching high school racers at Lapham Peak) was 5th overall and second woman in the 10 K Classic (age 50-54). In addition, perennial age group Korteloppet champ Mike Mandli, was 5th American in the 30 K Classic (age 55-59). Click here for complete results. For a more in-depth story, go to Tom Held's Blog in the MIlwaukee Journal Sentinel. Note: When you visit Tom's Blog, scroll down for the World Cup coverage and (further down) for a touching story on Sandy Sugden's epic Birkie, in memory of her husband Bob.

Sandy Sugden's Incredible Birkie

Last Saturday, 2/23/08, perhaps the most unbelievable performance was by our own Sandy Sugden, who finished dead last with a time of a little over 9 hours. While the winner only needed the endurance to last about 2 hours, Sandy dug deep for the stamina to last 4 1/2 times longer. Sandy skied this year as a memorial to her husband Bob, who passed away March 21, 2007. (Obituary in Archive 2nd Year.) Bob was the first president of the Lapham Peak Friends, active in the snowmaking project, and past World Masters champion. Quite a few people came out to welcome Sandy as the official last finisher of the 2008 American Birkebeiner. Her triumphant ski down Main Street in Hayward was captured on video by Sean Becker and posted on youtube. Click here but have a hanky ready. For Tom Held's Blog on Sandy's Birkie, Click here.

First Wednesday Night Race Beats Rain

The first Wednesday nite race went off as planned, just in time before the big meltdown. Mary Eloranta was first female and Chad Tolbert beat all the other men. Gary Hovila finished a few seconds behind and the rest of the men's field included some of our top junior skiers from past years. In fact UW-Green Bay alums were well represented, led by Tolbert (former NCAA All-American) and included Shane Hoelz, Mike Eckert and Josh North. Exceptional finishes were also posted by grizzled veterans John Hallet and Peter Jennik. (Click here for results.)

Friends of Lapham Peak Snowmaking Project
Phase 2-Part 2
Donate a Section Fundraiser

The Snowmaking Project has advanced to the last part of Phase 2. The well has been drilled, the cooling pond constructed, the distribution pump installed and the electrical lines installed. The last construction project for Phase 2 is the laying of around 3600 feet of underground water piping and hydrants. With the water pipe and hydrants in place, the first loop of the Snowmaking Project will be complete!
Please help the Friends of Lapham Peak finish Phase 2. The Snowmaking Project has been developed with gifts and donations. Would you consider donating a
Section? A Section consists of 250 feet of pipe with installation and a hydrant to allow the water to be delivered to the snow guns. The cost for the piping, hydrant and installation is $3000 per Section.

Recruit a group of friends, your family or individually donate to develop a
Section. Business and Corporate donors are encouraged to help develop this community asset. Section donors will be given special recognition.
